Before the scientific method was really a thing, there was 'natural philosophy.' This young lady is exploring the jungles of her country, cataloging poisonous insects with the help of her giant tortoise. As you do.

One of the things I like about steampunk is playing with the aesthetics of the Victorian world in a parallel (i.e., less awful) version of the Industrial Revolution.
